Sharpening
Participant will learn to sharpen spindle gouges, bowl gouges, spindle roughing gouges, scrapers, parting tools and the skew chisel. They are encouraged to bring in their own tools for shaping and sharpening, but this is not a requirement. The learning process will include both demonstration and hands-on help. If we can’t get to your tools the night of the class, we’ll schedule you in at another time convenient to you.
We teach people to sharpen with the systems we have in-house and work with everyday. We use a 1750 rpm grinder with 1” x 8” grinding wheels and Oneway sharpening jigs. The Oneway Varigrind jig costs on the order of $60. The best deal we’ve found over the years on a 1750 rpm 8” grinder with appropriate aluminum oxide wheels (white wheels) of 60 and 120 grit is available at Woodcraft in stores or on-line for under $100.
Cost of the 3-hour session to sharpen your tools and teach you how to follow up is $45.
“Once you are comfortable sharpening your own tools, turning becomes half as difficult and twice as much fun”
Here’s what the March 2008 class had to say:
“I especially liked the small group at the Sharpening Class. I got my tools sharpened properly – now I can go home and match it!” Warner
“The Sharpening Class was very helpful. I learned how to observe profile and get the correction and results desired.” Grace
“I’ve learned enough at this Sharpening Class that I could go home now and dub around with a lot more confidence than I had before.” Robert
“The direct assistance was extremely helpful. It was also useful to see what the instructor did with the other students and their equipment.” Peter
And you can see these very folks in action right here.
