The Woodturning School
Damariscotta, Maine

Welcome to the Woodturning School

Our staff is a small group of dedicated individuals who thoroughly enjoy all things related to turning - from the machines and hand tools to the wonderment of flying curls and the art of completed piece.

And more importantly for you - they love sharing what they’ve learned from their own experiences with others. It was this elemental value that ultimately brought the school to life a few years ago and maintains it today.

We’ve developed this website so that you can sit back, relax, and ponder the possibilities of learning to turn yourself. It’s set up such that it will cause you to ask a question in your mind and then provide the answer - at least we hope so. You be the judge.

One truly wonderful aspect of turning is that regardless of your skill level, there’s always something new to learn - a different technique with which to achieve a familiar effect or the endless variants of a new form to shoot for. Our instructors clearly recognize this and routinely push their own efforts towards new horizons.

It is this all encompassing dedication to woodturning that has allowed the school to offer a full range of course offerings. Read on and see for yourself.

The Woodturning School provides men, women, and children with a wonderful opportunity to explore all aspects of turning with minimal expense. We provide the lathes, sharpened appropriate tools, prepped wood, and proven instruction by seasoned woodturners. Most courses are offered in the evening as well as during the day.

Our Basic Woodturning Program involves four core courses: Intro One, Intro Two; Bowls One; and Bowls Two. These courses are designed to be taken sequentially starting with the basic fundamentals course - Intro One.

As we’ve gained experience, we’ve learned to listen to student’s suggestions. One such happy consequence was our recent Saturday morning tool sharpening session last fall and an entirely new course: Embellished Platters.

We’ve worked hard to make this website as fun to navigate as it is to take our classes. The Navigation Bar up top takes you to specific areas within the site with minimal confusion. We hope you enjoy your visit and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks,
Ken Keoughan, Director
